LAS VEGAS — An Arizona couple visiting Las Vegas was fatally shot Sunday night during a livestream near the Bellagio fountains, authorities confirmed.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said officers patrolling the Strip heard gunfire around 10:40 p.m. on June 8. When they arrived, they found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds. The suspect had already fled the scene.
Family members identified the victims as Rodney and Tanisha Finley, a West Valley couple in town celebrating Rodney’s birthday.
“They were literally soulmates,” said their daughter, Rakia Finley.
Their four children described Tanisha as a devoted mother who always put her family first. “She was loving, she was caring, she was always there for us,” said their son, Rodney Finley Jr.
They remembered their father as a joyful, outgoing man who brightened every room. “He was just the funny guy that everyone loved. He made a big impact wherever he went,” Rodney Jr. added.
The Finleys had a deep affection for Las Vegas and frequently shared their travel experiences on YouTube. They were livestreaming on the platform at the time of the shooting. The video reportedly shows a man drawing a firearm and firing multiple shots.
Police identified the suspect as 41-year-old Manuel Ruiz. He fled the scene but turned himself in the following day. Authorities charged Ruiz with two counts of open murder with a deadly weapon. He is currently being held without bail.
According to local media, Ruiz claimed he acted in self-defense, believing the couple was armed. However, police said no weapons were recovered, and none appeared in the livestream footage.
Investigators believe the shooting was targeted. Preliminary findings suggest the suspect and victims had previous interactions online and may have known each other prior to the incident.
The Finley family said they are devastated by the loss of two people who were pillars of strength, love, and laughter.
“They’re just two beautiful people,” said Rodney Jr. “I want them to never be forgotten.”
