A domestic violence incident spiraled into a deadly police pursuit in Sacramento, ending in a multi-vehicle crash and the arrest of Daniel Cunningham, 33.
According to the Sacramento Police Department, officers first responded to a domestic violence report on Farm Dale Way on June 1. Cunningham had fled the scene by the time they arrived. On Saturday, officers returned to the same address for a civil standby at the request of the victim, who needed help retrieving her belongings.
During that visit, police were alerted that Cunningham, a parolee with an active felony warrant, had been seen in a nearby vehicle. When officers attempted to arrest him, he took off, prompting a brief pursuit that ended in a crash at Florin Road and Greenhaven Drive. After the collision, Cunningham tried to run but was quickly captured with help from a police K-9.
One man involved in the crash died at the scene, pronounced dead by fire personnel. His identity is being withheld by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office until his family is notified.
The California Highway Patrol’s Major Accident Investigation Team is now handling the crash investigation and considering further charges. Cunningham, who was medically cleared after the arrest, remains in custody for multiple offenses including parole violation, domestic violence, and felony evasion.
