Tensions over immigration policy continue to escalate across the U.S., as protests flare nationwide in response to the Trump administration’s ongoing crackdown on illegal immigration.

In Kentucky, 25 Hispanic women were booked into the Laurel County Correctional Center Over the weekend on immigration charges. According to the jail’s online records, the women were detained by the Department of Homeland Security and placed in the facility early Sunday morning.

Dr. Judah Schept, a justice studies professor at Eastern Kentucky University, said the influx of immigration detainees at a local jail is significant—but not unexpected.

“This is how immigration detention works in America,” Schept explained. “Federal agencies like ICE often have intergovernmental service agreements with local law enforcement.”

Such agreements allow local jails to function as de facto immigration detention centers, under arrangements similar to a memorandum of understanding between the agencies.

The detentions come amid renewed scrutiny of ICE practices and growing public unrest, with rallies and demonstrations held across several states in recent days. Civil rights advocates continue to call for policy reform, particularly around the use of local jails for federal immigration enforcement.
